"Exempt students"

As defined in the Act (HESA 2003), exempt students are exempt from the payment of student contribution amounts or tuition fees for specified courses. Courses for which students are exempt are those:
consisting wholly of unsupported work experience in industry (WEI)
that form part of the requirements of a program for which the student has been awarded an exemption scholarship
for which the student has been awarded a Merit Based Equity Scholarship (a form of scholarship issued prior to 2000)
for which a higher degree by research student is in a Research Training Scheme place
for which a higher degree by research student is receiving a fee-relief scholarship
